Abstract
Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people living with HIV/AIDS is essential for controlling the disease. Medication intake is influenced by various psychosocial and cultural factors that shape and give direction to everyday reality. It is necessary to recognize and document the different ways of experiencing life in relation to incorporating lifelong medical treatment for a diagnosis that still carries the risk of social stigmatization. This study aimed to explore the experience of using ART in daily life and the experiences associated with adherence in people living with HIV (PLHIV). The study was qualitative descriptive, conducted in three specialized care centers in Mexico. In-depth interviews were conducted with 44 participants, and content analysis was performed using the Atlas.ti 9 software. The findings of this study revealed experiences that participants considered as barriers and motivators for ART adherence in relation to social and family support, mental health, psychological adaptation to the illness, information, fears, and effects related to the disease's progression and medication, as well as the patient-care process. The findings of this study are discussed to analyze and deepen understanding of the experiences that could be recognized and used as a basis for designing different adherence strategies by healthcare professionals.
