QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF LEISURE AND FREE TIME CONSUMED BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, FROM A GENDER PERSPECTIVE
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
It is essential to analyze the leisure preferences of the university population to define their well-being, preferences and needs, which allows designing effective strategies to support and promote mental and physical health, as well as personal and academic enrichment. To find out if gender differences influence leisure experiences in students at the University of Salamanca. Non-probabilistic convenience sampling was used to select 487 students from the University of Salamanca who voluntarily responded to a semi-structured questionnaire distributed online through of the virtual campus. A qualitative methodology, specifically the phenomenological method, was used to explore the leisure experiences of men and women, with subsequent content analysis to identify emerging patterns based on gender. This study reveals that both men and women consider leisure as a way to disconnect from daily stress and break routine, highlighting its social aspect and the importance attributed to mental health, especially by men. The main reasons for giving up leisure are lack of time and academic load, although women also consider the emotions associated with the activity. This study shows that there are different preferences and perspectives in leisure depending on gender, in the relationship between mental and physical health derived from leisure and in the reasons for not engaging in leisure activities. But common points have also been found, such as the taste for practicing sports and the consideration of the social component that is associated with leisure and free time.
